The Story

between comfort and tradition

Villa delle Rose, located at Via Aurelia Orientale 65 in Rapallo, is a historic residence of great charm that now houses the hotel of the same name. The villa was built in 1908 in the Art Nouveau style, a period when Rapallo was becoming an elite destination for international tourism and European nobility. The First Owner: Admiral Arturo Costantini. The house was built as a private residence for Admiral Arturo Costantini. The choice of location and design were not accidental, but followed precise criteria dictated by the owner's personal taste and needs:

  • Architecture and Acoustics: The admiral had the state room built with particular attention to acoustics, specifically to enhance the sound of the piano, an instrument much loved by his wife.
  • Exposure: The structure was designed to ensure a "healthy rest", with an optimal exposure (north-south) to take advantage of the light and mild climate of the Gulf of Tigullio.

Architectural Features

elegantly furnished

Being an early twentieth-century villa, it still retains many of the original elements that make it an authentic example of period architecture in Rapallo:

The Liberty Style

The villa features the elegant lines typical of the Italian "Floreale" style, with refined decorations and quality materials.

Original Interiors

Many details have remained unchanged since 1908, including the wide marble staircases (the structure, faithful to the original, does not have an elevator to preserve its architectural integrity).

The Name

The name "Villa delle Rose" (and later Hotel delle Rose) probably derives from the lush vegetation and flowers that historically adorned the property's garden.

Context

Historical and Geographical

The villa is located in a strategic position, on the Via Aurelia in the direction of Levante (towards Chiavari), a short distance from other important historical sites:

  • Near Villa Tigullio: Located a few hundred meters from Casale Park and Villa Tigullio (home of the Lace Museum).
  • Eastern Aurelia: This area was and still is characterised by high-quality residences that hosted intellectuals and nobles (such as the nearby Villa San Faustino, where Nietzsche stayed).

Transformation into a Hotel

elegantly furnished

Over the decades, the villa has evolved from a private residence to a hospitality facility. Despite the change in use, the property has retained its historic character, avoiding invasive renovations that would have erased Admiral Costantini's legacy.

Interesting fact: Unlike many contemporary villas that were heavily divided into apartments, Villa delle Rose has maintained its structural unity, allowing the original plan of the 1908 stately residence to still be clearly visible today.
